Safety and courtesy

Complete gym rules

These rules were migrated from the current public Rules & Courtesy page on July 28, 2026. Staff directions always take precedence.

  1. Register at the front desk and have a current waiver. A parent or court-appointed legal guardian must sign for a minor.
  2. Pass the belay test before top-rope belaying. Staff may require repeat testing and may revoke certification after unsafe behavior.
  3. Pass the lead climbing and belay check before leading. Lead climbers provide their own UIAA-approved dynamic rope; only Vertex staff may teach lead systems in the gym.
  4. Use UIAA-approved harnesses and belay devices. Attach the belay system directly to the harness and tie in with a figure-eight follow-through.
  5. Wear rubber-soled, closed-toe shoes while climbing.
  6. Do not climb past rope anchors. Soloing is prohibited.
  7. Boulder only in designated areas and below the marked ten-foot line. Never boulder below roped climbers.
  8. Keep carpeted landing areas clear for climbers and belayers.
  9. Do not remove, rotate, or alter holds, features, or route markers. Report loose or damaged equipment to staff.
  10. Wear closed-toe shoes while weight training.
  11. Drugs, alcohol, and tobacco are prohibited. Do not use the facility while impaired by any substance or medication.
  12. Keep food, drinks, personal items, and other objects out of climbing and landing areas.
  13. Climbing is dangerous. Climb at your own risk and stop to ask staff whenever a system is unclear.

Courtesy

  • Store belongings in day-use lockers or cubbies. Vertex is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • During peak hours, take one climb and offer the rope to anyone waiting.
  • Use chalk balls instead of loose chalk when possible.
  • Avoid profanity and behavior that disrupts other visitors.
  • Re-rack weights and wipe down benches, mats, and machines.
  • Use towels considerately and dispose of waste in the marked recycling, compost, and landfill bins.
